Briar Patch (Federation Scenario Mission)

Mission Overview[]

The area of space known as the "Briar Patch" is a dangerous area of Sector 441 and the ships passing through it must travel using only partial impulse power or risk damaging their ship's engines. A Federation Sovereign class starship has found itself inside this cloud and is under attack by enemy ships. Only a captain of great skill and ingenuity will be able to win this battle and leave the deadly "Briar Patch" in one piece.

Set Up[]

Enemy Player[]

70 Squadron Points, including two (and only two) ships.

Federation Player[]

60 Squadron Points, including one (and only one) Sovereign Class ship.

Play Area[]

First, the players set up in a standard 2 player game. The Federation player then places the 6 Objective Tokens anywhere in the play area, with the following restriction: No Objective Token may be places within Range 2 of any edge of the play area, any ship, or any other Objective token. NOTE: The Objective Tokens represent particularly dangerous areas of space debris and deadly radiation.

Special Rules[]

Movement in the Briar Patch: No ship can safely travel through the Briar Patch at speeds higher than 2. Any ship that performs a Maneuver with a number greater than 2, suffers 1 damage for every point of that Maneuver over 2. This damage occurs immediately after the ship moves, before taking Actions.

A player who has just performed a Maneuver greater than 2 may immediately place an Auxiliary Power Token beside their ship to decrease the damage by 1.

If a ship has no Active Shields when suffering damage in this way, the damage applied to that ship's Hull is treated as critical damage.

Example: The Federation ship performs a 4 [Forward] Maneuver. The maneuver is greater than the safe speed of 2, so that ship will suffer 2 damage for performing the maneuver. The ship has no Active Shields left, so the damage will be applied to the ship's Hull. That ship's player chooses to place an Auxiliary Power Token beside their ship, so the total damage is reduced to 1 critical damage.

Space Debris and Radiation: The Objective Tokens are treated as Obstacles (see page 22 of the Full Rules of Play) with the following exceptions:

  • If a ship's base or Maneuver Template overlaps an Obstacle Token, that ship rolls 3 attack dice. And Hit or Critical hit results damage the ship as normal. Ships cannot roll defence dice against this damage.
  • If a ship fires through an Obstacle, the Obstacle explodes and all ships within Range 1 of the Obstacle Token suffer damage as though they had overlapped the Obstacle Token. If an Obstacle Token explodes in this manner, remove it from the play area. NOTE: Ships cannot directly attack Obstacle Tokens.

Objectives[]

Federation Player: Destroy both enemy ships and exit the play area.

Enemy Player: Destroy the Federation ship and have at least 1 of your ships exit the play area

If either player's ship(s) exit the play area before destroying their opponent's ship(s), that player loses.
